12 business leaders have also been shortlisted for the annual awards and this year's edition also features; African of the Year 2017; African Female Leader of the Year 2017 and Young Person of the Year 2017.

Kagame and Magufuli are among those nominated in the African of the Year category. Comcraft Group’s Chairman Manu Chandaria is among those nominated in the philanthropy and charitable contributions to society category.

Two Kenyans also feature in the Young People category; Ory Okolloh, the Director of Investments at Omidyar Network and Joel Macharia, the CEO and founder of financial services firm Abacus.

According to organisers, nominees were vetted based on activities and actions that contributed to job and wealth creation, promoting Africa's image abroad and enhancing democracy.

“Africans have continued to break and set new boundaries, making the selection a lot more interesting, albeit, herculean.

"Some African leaders have become increasingly restless, leaving nothing to chance on their journey to make their communities a better place," stated the magazine's publisher Ken Giami.

The winners will be announced in early January.
