Mysterious Fire Burns Maize Depot in Eldoret

A mysterious fire on Thursday morning broke out at the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) Eldoret burning a section of the depot.

It is still unclear what caused the fire with a maize dryer being blamed for the inferno.

Uasin Gishu County Secretary Peter Lelei confirmed the inferno adding that more damage could have occurred if the response team had not reacted quickly.

"We dashed to the depot where we found a huge fire which had just started. Luckily, our firemen responded quickly," he stated.

A maize dryer was destroyed during the early morning inferno.

The fire incident comes at a time when the price of maize flour has risen following the end of the subsidy program.

The Government had in May 2017 subsidized the price of 1Kg Unga to Sh47 whereas a 2Kg packet went for Sh90.

"We’ve agreed that the subsidy programme will officially come to an end on December 31,” Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Willy Bett announced last year.

Meanwhile, trucks have been queuing outside the board offices waiting for their turn to supply the produce.

Last month, queues outside the depot premises went for as long as three kilometers.
