"We have achieved a lot in the education sector by not asking for any more money from the taxpayer. We have just used the money we have always had.

"A full transition of learners from primary school to secondary school is now a reality because of the free day secondary education," he explained.

The event marked the beginning of a distribution of textbooks process that will see the government take books directly to schools.

According to Education CS Fred Matiang'i, the program will ensure that all public primary and secondary schools get the instructional materials necessary for effective teaching and learning.

The project was initiated following President Kenyatta's directive for a 1:1 ratio of student to a textbook.
