Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko Now Moves to High Court

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko on Monday filed a suit at the High Court to stop payments to all creditors.

According to the governor, this moved is aimed at allowing an audit of pending bills amounting to Sh60 Billion.

Sonko has been struggling to restore sanity in the county government where millions were being lost daily.

This comes a few days after Deputy Governor Polycarp Igathe handed in his resignation effective January 31.

Sources indicate that differences in tendering, accusations of collusion with State House to usurp powers and battle for control of operations at City Hall contributed to the fall out between the two.

On Saturday, Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja stated that there were plans by county’s elected leaders to reach out to Mr Igathe to try and convince him to rescind his decision to resign.

“We (Nairobi leaders) will discuss the matter. Also, senators know there are clauses that are not clear (on filling of the deputy governor’s position) and we are looking into it so that Nyeri County can get a deputy governor.

"In Nairobi, if we will not be able to bring the two together, we will move on,” stated the Senator in Kiambu.

Igathe caught many Kenyans by surprise when he announced his resignation via Twitter on Friday revealing that he had failed to earn the trust of Sonko.

“Dear Nairobians, it is with a heavy heart that I resign my seat as elected Deputy Governor of Nairobi City County effective 1pm on 31st Jan 2018.

"I regret I have failed to earn the trust of the Governor to enable me to drive Admin & Management of the county.

“Without fear, favour or ill will I step down to avoid abusing or betraying my oath of office to Kenyans, Nairobians & my family. Thank you for the encouraging support given to me so far," he wrote.
