MP Charles Njagua Takes Mike Sonko's Government to Court

Starehe Member of Parliament (MP) Charles Kanyi "Jaguar" has moved to court to challenge a directive from the Nairobi County administration to ban boda bodas from the Central Business District (CBD).

The Starehe legislator is seeking to have the courts overturn a Gazette Notice published by acting County Secretary Leboo Morintat on Monday.

Governor Mike Sonko's secretary outlined that only the riders offering courier services would continue to access the CBD.

"Pursuant to the provisions of the Traffic Act CAP 403 of 2014 of the Laws of the Republic of Kenya, the county government of Nairobi wishes to inform all motorcycle operators ferrying passengers to and from the CBD that such activities have been banned with immediate effect," the notice by Morintat read in part.

Governor Sonko has recently been the subject of wrath as Nairobi residents turned the accusing finger at his administration for the upsurge of muggings within the CBD.

In his defence, the Governor alleged that the criminal gangs behind the daylight robberies were being funded by politicians and businessmen.

"After receiving several cases of insecurity within some section of Nairobi CBD my office today formed anti-mugging squad detectives who will work closely with Kenya police to curb the situation.

"We have also received intelligence report that some politicians and business people are funding youths to terrorize people. We are on the lookout and several arrests will be made forthwith," Gov Sonko posted on his Facebook timeline.

Addressing how to end the muggings, Jaguar noted that the police and relevant bodies mandated to provide security ought to be more alert adding that Kenyans should also report criminal activities to the agencies.

Among the three solutions the Starehe MP offered to solve the issue were the involvement of the National Youth Service (NYS) to reduce unemployment as well as police exercising restraint.
