Why Joho Could Cause Cancellation of Global Event - Balala Warns

Tourism Cabinet Secretary, Najib Balala, on Sunday warned Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho, that the county may fail to host the 79th Skal International World Congress this year.

Balala cited that the issues of garbage and spread of diseases may deprive the county the chance to host a global event if they are not looked into adequately.

Speaking during the National Assembly sports, tourism and culture retreat induction meeting, Balala expressed fears of the cancelation of the global event and urged the Governor to quickly control the menace.

"We have to up our game as a county so that we be able to attract these conferences," stated Balala.

He also mentioned that it will be very unfortunate to have the United Nations cancel the event as he expressed that he bid for the event to be brought to Kenya while in Monacco since it will bring revenue to the country.

"We have to clean up the county. We can't be having these diseases and expect people to visit us, " Balala asserted.

He asked the Governor to stop politicising the situation and work.

Governor Joho has previously been condemned for the dirt present in the city due to the uncollected garbage, making its residents vulnerable to outbreaks of diseases.

Former Health Cabinet Secretary, Cleopa Mailu, last week revealed that Joho is to blame for the frequent outbreaks of diseases in his county.

CS Mailu noted that the county government does not report disease incidents to the national government for help and the Ministry finds out about some cases through social media.

“The delay in administrating and being able to communicate can affect the population we want to serve. Rain, garbage and environmental condition encouraged the breeding of mosquitos and transmission of disease,” Dr Mailu stated.
