Chaos erupted at the Homa Bay County Assembly on Tuesday morning as some MCAs were barred from accessing the premises by people whose identities could not immediately be established, an incident that disrupted proceedings.

This came amid claims of a plan to impeach Majority Leader Richard Ogindo on June 10 over accusations of corruption.

"We were stopped for no reason. Some of us had travelled long distances to be here only to be blocked from doing our job," one of the MCA said.

The impeachment came after 22 MCAs had signed a petition to have him impeached, while 21 MCAs had declined the sign.

Reports indicated that unknown people were seen at the assembly gates turning away some MCAs who were attempting to enter the assembly compound.

Some MCAs claimed Ogindo manipulated access to car grants, demanding kickbacks before approving financial benefits.

"He has been playing dirty politics with our welfare. This house cannot function if the leadership acts like it owns it," one of the MCA said.

It was reported that investigations are underway to establish who barred the MCAs from entering the compound.

"We are witnessing democracy being strangled. This kind of lawlessness has no place in a county government," said an opposition-aligned MCA.

Following the incident, Ogindo said the MCAs involved in planning the impeachment motions did so for personal interests.

"We have been giving everybody every opportunity to express his or herself and now we are not aware of their selfish interest because, as an assembly, our welfare is always settled and we don't want anybody to cause disruptions,” Ogindo said.
