Why Raila's Security was Withdrawn Hours to Swearing-in

The security detail of NASA leader Raila Odinga was withdrawn hours to the swearing-in and it has now emerged that the order was issued by the National Security Advisory Committee (NSAC).

Reports indicate that there was a meeting by top security organs on Monday who concluded that it would make no sense to provide State security for the purpose of engaging in an 'illegal activity.'

The same team decided that police should be withdrawn from Uhuru Park, relying on intelligence that the opposition leaders hoped a confrontation would arise between officers and their supporters.

The Nation reported that during the meeting at Harambee House, the NSAC also disarmed the security detail of Nasa co-principals Kalonzo Musyoka, Musalia Mudavadi and Moses Wetang’ula.

NSAC is chaired by the head of civil service and is only second to the National Security Council, which is chaired by the President.

It is alleged that leaders of the opposition planned to call off the swearing-in ceremony if police would interfere and would then put the blame on the government for provoking their supporters.

The swearing-in went ahead as planned and Odinga and his team left after a few minutes.

He later took to his Twitter account to thank his supporters who showed up in large numbers and stated that he had reached the promised land of Canaan.

"I wish to thank the people of Kenya for the mandate they have given us and for their steadfast confidence in us.

"You came from all corners of the republic to witness my inauguration and it was good to see you out in millions.

"We have arrived in Canaan; thank you for staying the course with us. Asanteni sana (thank you very much)," he stated.
