Why CJ Maraga Travelled to Meet Joho

Chief Justice David Maraga on Wednesday travelled to Mombasa to meet Governor Ali Hassan Joho as he laid the foundation stone for the construction of Mombasa High court building.

He thanked Joho for giving the Judiciary a chance to put up the new building and hailed the relationship between the Council of Governors and his team.

Maraga further hailed governors for respecting the work of the Judiciary as an independent arm of government by not linking them to political battles.

"I have no inhibitions when I go to Joho's office or any other governor's office.

"I am glad they appreciate our neutrality and do not draw us into their political battles," stated Maraga.

The construction of the building will cost about Sh445 Million and will be funded by the World Bank.

The project stalled six years ago after the plot was grabbed by a Mombasa businessman, resulting in a protracted dispute.

The National Lands Commission (NLC) and the Ministry of Lands have since returned the 1.477-hectare plot to the Judiciary.

The four-storey building, to be named Justice Tower, will house all divisions of the High Court and lower courts that are presently located in various buildings scattered across the county.

Members of public will also use digital technology to monitor the progress of their cases instead of relying on court clerks and lawyers for updates.
