NMG Reports Death Announcement With Wanjigi's Photo to Police

Nation Media Group (NMG) on Wednesday announced that it had reported the death announcement advert with Jimmy Wanjigi's photo to the Police.

In a statement, the media house also apologized for the erroneously published death announcement of a person identified as James Richard Wanjagi but bearing the picture of Mr Wanjigi.

"We regret the pain and anguish this may have caused Mr Wanjigi and his family," the statement read.

The letter addressed by Head of Corporate and Regulatory Matter, Clifford Machoka, also noted that the media house had taken action against the personnel involved in the incorrect publication.

"Nation Media Group does not condone such publication, which clearly goes against our editorial policy.

"We have taken immediate action against those responsible for the placement of the announcement, including reporting the matter to the police for further investigations," the statement read.

According to the death announcement image, the person who is named James Richard Wanjagi died on January 30 and was to have been buried on Tuesday 6.

Information on the image is similar to facts of the National Super Alliance (NASA) affiliated billionaire.

The names of his wife, Irene Wanjigi, and his parents James Maina and Wambui Magari are identical to those of the person on the obituary on the Nation newspaper.

Meanwhile, Wanjigi is among other 15 NASA leaders whose passports were suspended on Tuesday by the Director of Immigration Maj-Gen (Rtd) Gordon Kihalangwa.

According to Mr Kihalangwa, the security agencies are investigating the individuals whose passports were revoked over various issues, an incident that warranted the move.

“They will be on our watch list and will not be able to use them to travel. They have 21 days to surrender them to my office,” he asserted.
