US Predicts the Major Threat Kenya Faces in 2018

The United States Intelligence has predicted that Kenya will face political instability as it seeks to address the various grievances raised during the post-election period.

In a report dubbed Worldwide Threat Assessment of the Intelligence Community, the agency warned that Kenya, alongside Ethiopia, risks facing similar problems of political instability.

“The Ethiopian and Kenyan Governments are likely to face opposition from publics agitating for redress of political grievances,” part of the report read.

The report was presented to the United States Congress in Capitol Hill by the US Director of National Intelligence Daniel Coats.

"We are deeply concerned by recent political developments in Kenya. Both the government and the opposition have taken steps that have undermined Kenya's institutions, and driven wedges among its citizens," he stated.

This warning comes at a time when the foreign envoys in Kenya are pushing for dialogue between NASA leader Raila Odinga and President Uhuru Kenyatta.

The envoys from US and Britain called upon Odinga to recognize President Kenyatta as the country's legitimately elected leader.

They noted that Odinga needs to accept Kenyatta's Presidency "as the basis for the dialogue that it (the opposition) and many Kenyans want."

In the US Intelligence report, they also condemned the recent ignorance of court orders by Government authorities.

"We strongly urge the Government to comply fully with court orders and follow legal process in appealing or contesting them," they stated adding that: "Freedom of expression, freedom of the media, and all civil rights need to be protected."
