The 2 Meetings That Will Decide Raila's Fate

The Raila Odinga-led Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has scheduled 2 crucial meetings for this week, with major decisions on the party's future and that of the National Super Alliance (NASA) coalition set to be made.

A National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting will be held on Thursday, followed by a National Governing Council (NGC) meeting the next day.

“We are having the meetings back-to-back in Nairobi,” ODM Chair John Mbadi stated on Saturday.

The meetings will be used to fill vacant positions in the party leadership structure and strategize on the way forward for Odinga following his January 30 swearing in as the People's President.

It is also expected that a decision will be made on how ODM will engage the 3 other parties that make up NASA.

Opposition supporters were disappointed by the absence of the 3 co-principals at the event and it still remains unclear whether Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka will be sworn in as well.

There has been growing discontent within the opposition over, among other things, the allocation of house leadership positions.

This was brought to the fore when Kalonzo wrote to the Speaker of the house backing Borabu MP Ben Momanyi for a spot on the Parliamentary Service Commission (PSC), sparking outrage from members of other affiliate parties.

On Saturday, however, Kalonzo maintained that the coalition was united, contrary to reports.

"Politics has just started, there is no turning back, we must make sure that not again will elections be stolen and people ruled by force,” he stated at a burial in Kilifi.
