Govt Kicks 700 Out of Mombasa Port

Industrializaton CS Adan Mohammed has ordered 700 people living on a 3,000 acre piece of land owned by the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) to vacate.

He further stated that those living on the land would not be compensated as they were 'invaders'.

Mohammed explained that the move was meant to pave way for a major project that would cost $1Billion dollars.

“Anybody settling here thinking they will be compensated is daydreaming. This land will be reclaimed for whatever use the government has for it,” he declared.

A  special economic zone, industrial park and a berth are to be constructed as part of the project, Mohammed divulged.

Likoni MP Mishi Mboko has stated that as much as they welcomed development, those living in Dongo Kundu should be compensated as many lived there before KPA took over the land.

“Before KPA there were people living on that land. They were identified and we ask the government to compensate them. We will not allow our people to continue suffering in the name of development projects,” she stated.

Mohammed claimed that the project would create 50,000 jobs and promote regional trade.

Mboko disclosed that she met the CS along with other leaders who demanded that the state involve leaders from the area led by Governor Ali Hassan Joho.

“No one will be evicted in either Bububu, Mwangala or Dongo Kundu. We welcome the projects because they will create jobs but public participation is important,” she noted.
