Cyprian Awiti Announces Next Step After Losing Homa Bay Governor Seat

Homa Bay Governor Cyprian Awiti, who lost his seat on Tuesday morning, has stated that he will appeal the High Court ruling.

Awiti and his deputy, Hamilton Orata, stated that they were not satisfied with the judgement made by Justice Joseph Karanja who nullified the governor's election.

The county boss was further ordered to pay Sh2 Million to the petitioner, former Kasipul MP Joseph Magwanga.

Awiti also distanced himself from claims that he had blamed the nullification on corruption in the judiciary.

“We wish to inform the public that Homa Bay County Government and Mr Awiti respect and uphold the rule of law and the Judiciary for that matter,” remarked the Governor.

Justice Karanja ordered a fresh election citing irregularities in the August 8 polls and that Awiti's election was not free and fair.

In December, the High Court ordered a recount and scrutiny of votes for the Governor race.

Justice Karanja had dismissed an application by Governor Awiti urging the court not to proceed with a recount.

The court granted an order to scrutinise and audit results on forms 37A, B and C, as well as KIEMS kits used by the electoral agency.

According to the IEBC's results which were nullified by the court, Awiti got 210,173 votes while Mr Magwanga came second with 189,060 votes.
