Murang'a Governor Mwangi Wa Iria Rejects Jubilee Government's Project

Murang'a Governor Mwangi Wa Iria has opposed plans by the Government to put up a landfill in his county.

In a statement on Tuesday, the county boss maintained that he was puzzled with the plan since Murang'a is densely populated compared to the other counties that will use the waste site.

In his argument, Wa Iria noted that the public was not consulted on the matter as required by the Enviromental Management and Coordination Act (1999).

He further stated that residents of Kihiu Mwiri village where the landfill was to be erected were opposed to the project maintaining that it was imposed on them.

The Murang'a county boss also stated that reports by the project leader, Benjamin Njenga, were misleading after he alleged that county leaders had helped pick the land.

Wa Iria questioned the consequences the solid waste project would have on the environment and the socio-economic problems it will bring in Murang'a.

"I had the privilege of visiting a solid waste management site in Akko, Israel, where the landfill is well constructed with an impermeable lining to prevent soil and aquifer contamination," he stated.

"The Murang'a project should have a proper Environmental Impact Assessment carried out and public participation conducted," he added.

The Governor asked NEMA officials to indicate clearly the pros and cons the project will have on the environment and other factors that the residents of Murang'a might encounter.

Governor Wa Iria has never shied away from standing his ground for the good of the public especially after he banned betting and illicit liquor from Murang'a.
