Amount of Money Kenyan Women Spend on Hair Annually

Hair is a symbol of identity for some and research suggests that it might be an expression of one's personality.

Be it short, long, curly, dark or blonde, having a neat hairstyle goes a long way in even influencing how people address us.

This might explain why women invest a lot of money to ensure they have less 'bad hair days.'

According to a report by AfroUrembo Beauty Trends, Kenyan women spend an average of  Sh50,000 on hair per year.

The findings further suggest that women spend around 20 percent of their income on hair, which is a slight increase from 15 percent in 2016.

Women also prefer natural products on their hair as opposed to strong chemicals used in straightening.

“The trend among women in Kenya is not to use too many commercial products on their hair as very strong, harsh chemicals are used to straighten the hair, they prefer hair care products that are more natural, less harsh and offer smoothing benefits,” reads the report in part.

Irene Kieru, Chief Executive Officer of AfroUrembo, also stated that women prefer male hairdressers over their female counterparts, though this is subject to debate.

In the last few years, women have opted for human hair shipped from abroad for a more natural look as opposed to synthetic weaves.

A spot check by Kenyans.co.ke revealed that some weaves go for over Sh200,000 and a simple retouch in some salons in Westlands costs a cool Sh80,000.
