Kalonzo Musyoka Advises Charity Ngilu How to Deal With Charcoal Production Ban

NASA co-principal, Kalonzo Musyoka, on Tuesday advised Kitui Governor, Charity Ngilu, how to deal with the controversial ban of charcoal production and sand harvesting in the Eastern county.

Speaking during the 5th graduation ceremony at South Eastern Kenya University (SEKU), he urged Governor Ngilu to continue enforcing the ban in the county without hesitation or fear.

He explained that increased deforestation and environmental degradation must be fought with all available means which should be enforced by the Governor.

The Wiper Party leader also told Ngilu to cease being intimidated or cowed by anti-crusaders as well as interferences from political inclinations.

“We must act now to reverse environmental degradation. Today, rivers that have never been affected by seasons are running dry and very soon, unless drastic measures are taken, protection of scarce water resources could turn into hostilities,” Kalonzo stated.

Ngilu, who was also present during the function, assured Kalonzo that she would not stop the fight against the ban in her county.

“We are not turning back in this fight against charcoal trade. It does not matter who is protesting or issuing threats. Let them find other places to destroy environment but not Kitui County,” Governor Ngilu asserted.

The Governor further stated that any moves to intimidate her through government institutions such as the NCIC and DCI will not cow her.

The ban which came into effect on January 16 elicited protests especially from charcoal traders within the county who resorted to burning vehicles transporting the same in the region.
