    Hon. Charity Kaluki Ngilu is the Cabinet Secretary for Ministry of Land, Housing and Urban Development. Prior to her appointment, she was the Minister for Water and Irrigation for five years. As Minister, Hon. Ngilu achieved a lot by streamlining and improving water services management and governance.
    During her tenure, 7 million more people were able to access water across the country. The country began a robust water storage program with construction of 5 large dams in Marsabit, Baringo, Machakos, Kitui and Kajiado counties.
    She ensured a 20% increase in rural sanitation coverage and 6% increase in urban sewerage coverage. Through her intervention the land under irrigation was increased by over 75,000 hectares.
    Before then she was the Minister of Health a position she held until October 2007. During her stint as the Minister of Health, she ensured that more Kenyans accessed healthcare. This was by removing financial barriers to accessing health in the country by lowering and abolishing fees at health centers and dispensaries respectively.
    She engaged staff on contract and posted them to needy areas increasing the number of health workers by 7000. She restructured KEMSA thereby making essential medicines and medical supplies available at all lower level facilities. She also procured and distributed over 150 ambulances to facilities across the country which in turn increased 30% in resources to the health sector. She ensured the procurement of ARV and FP commodities therby increasing access to quality health for HIV/AIDS patients. She guided formulation of Health Sector Services Fund a mechanism for direct transfer of funds to health facilities.
    Hon. Ngilu is a renowned leader who has served as the Member of Parliament for Kitui Central Constituency, a position she was elected to a record 4 times. Until hr appointment as Cabinet Secretary she was the party leader of National Rainbow Coalition (NARC). She served as a Chairperson of Women's Political Alliance.
    In 1997 she was the first female Presidential Candidate o running on the Social Democratic Party (SDP). While in parliament Hon. Ngilu served variously as a Member of House Business Committee between 2002 - 2011.
    Hon. Ngilu holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Leadership and Management from St. Paul's University. She is also a Certified Public Secretary. In 2003 she got an national commendation of Elder of the Golden Heart (EGH) for her service to the Nation.   ©   2018   All Rights Reserved
