ODM Directs Nyanza Region Speakers to Deduct MCAs' Salaries

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has written to speakers of the County Assemblies in Nyanza region to deduct and remit members' contribution to the party.

Executive Director of the party, Oduor Ong'wen, stated that the delayed payments by the members could affect operations of the party, a concern that has led to the issuing of the directive.

He also expressed the party's concern that it is almost eight months after last year's August polls yet members of the county assemblies have not paid their monthly fees.

In a letter seen by Standard, the party leaders want the speakers to deduct the money and remit it to the party.

According to the party guidelines, every month, each MCA, MP and Governor are required to pay Sh 5,000, Sh20,000 and Sh50,000 respectively to fund the party's day-to-day operations and to pay the staff at the secretariat.

However, Ong'wen did not divulge to the Standard how much the MCAs owe the party.

Kisumu County Assembly Speaker Onyango Oloo confirmed that all the 49 MCAs have not paid their monthly dues to ODM.

Mr Oloo, however, defended the MCAs delay on the payment, claiming that the leadership had not yet sent special codes that will allow the County Assembly to deduct the money directly from the treasury and forward it to the party.

"With the introduction of integrated financial management systems we have to get special codes for transparency and accountability, " mentioned Mr Oloo.

The party has been facing financial problems of late, hence the move to follow up on their member's monthly payment to it.
