Amina Mohammed Fires Meru University VC over Student Leader's Death

Meru University Vice-Chancellor, Prof Japheth Magambo, has been sent on terminal leave by Education Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohammed following the death of a student leader, Evans Njoroge, allegedly at the hands of police.

Magambo will be replaced in acting capacity by Prof Charity Gichuki.

The student leader, nicknamed Kidero, was reportedly shot at close range by a police officer on February 27.

A report from the Government pathologist confirmed that Njoroge was shot with a pistol and died instantly.

Family doctor, Dr Moses Njue who was also present for the post-mortem stated that the shooter had the gun pressed against the head of the deceased before firing.

“l am confident that we have done a good job and l believe that there will be justice after the final report is released in two to three weeks’ time. It was an extensive surgery and we found that the skull was damaged and it has multiple fractures,” he noted.

Hundreds of students from the university gathered at the Meru Level Five Hospital where they were allowed to view the body before it was transported to Longonot for the burial.

The murder sparked outrage from several quarters, with many calling for the ouster of Magambo and the arrest of the officer who shot the deceased.

Njoroge was a popular leader and a fourth year student pursuing a degree in Mathematics and Computer Science.

On the day of his death, he was leading a protest against the management of Meru University, accusing the VC of corruption and failing to act on issues raised by students.
