Governor Mike Sonko Criticises Courts for Lenient Rulings

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has criticised the courts for giving punitive fines and sentences to people accused of being involved or found guilty of corruption.

Speaking on Tuesday, the Governor noted that individuals accused of swindling the County of millions have been given very lenient punishments by the courts even after being found guilty of graft.

Sonko made the remarks when he hosted a delegation of Central Organization Trade Unions (COTU) led by Secretary General Francis Atwoli at City Hall.

“We have tried our level best to curb graft, but courts should give a punitive ruling to these individuals," the governor stated.

"During the time of my predecessor, huge amounts of money were lost in the hands of these characters, them getting a free pass isn't teaching any lesson,” he added.

Atwoli applauded the governor for proving to be a performer, unlike his predecessor Evans Kidero.

The COTU boss noted that during former Governor Kidero’s tenure, there used to be huge garbage pile-up, especially along Mombasa Road, which Sonko's administration has cleared up in a short period of time.

Atwoli requested the Governor to tackle land grabbing issues head-on and punish those found guilty to face the full wrath of the law.

“Land grabbing syndicate in Nairobi is real. I have a victim in Mariakani in South B and I want you Governor to take the case up and assist those families," Atwoli told Sonko.

Sonko affirmed his commitment to the people of Nairobi and assured Atwoli that he will deal with cases of land grabbing since it was his mandate to Nairobi residents.
