1 Dies After Swine Flu is Reported in Nanyuki

Swine Flu (H1N1 virus) has been reported in Nanyuki after a baby died of the virus on Wednesday.

According to reports by Laikipia health official, Donald Mogoi, results from the National Health Laboratory confirmed that the baby had succumbed to the virus.

Kenya was badly hit by the virus in 2009 after detection of the first case of the swine flu.

A 20-year old British student, who had jetted into the country from the UK, was the first to test positive of the A(H1N1) in Kenya.

Medics, however, noted that the case was mild and urged the public to stay calm.

Public health experts maintained that the country’s risk profile was heightened by its extensive travel and trade relations with other countries.

They further pointed out to the fact that Kenya was a regional air transport hub that received many passengers from around the World.

Swine Flu is noted to be caused by eating pork products that are not properly cooked since the virus that causes the disease is found in pigs.

Doctors stated that the flu can be contained through basic personal hygiene, health etiquette, early detection and quick isolation to avoid the spread.

They further described swine flu as a mild condition and urged the public to seek prompt treatment if they had a fever and general body weakness.

The World Health Organisation officially declared the disease a global pandemic in June 2009.
