US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson to Hold Talks with Uhuru Kenyatta

United States (US) Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson, will jet into the country on Friday and is expected to meet President Uhuru Kenyatta and other government officials at some point during his tour from March 9 to 12.

In a statement by the U.S State Department, Tillerson will hold talks with the President and discuss three issues including focusing on strengthening US support for the democratic process in Kenya.

President Donald Trump's secretary will also discuss refugee issues, as well as press freedom in the country.

The US Secretary is preparing for a tour of Africa that will see him visit N'Djamena in Chad, Djibouti, Ethiopia and Nigeria.

He stated that his visit will also focus on strengthening American partnership with the African countries and its people.

Tillerson criticised China, which has been fostering its engagement in Africa, stating that it encouraged dependency, utilised corruption deals and endangered Africa's natural resources.

During his tour, Tillerson will also discuss ways in which US Government can work with partners to counter terrorism, advance peace and security, promote good governance and foster beneficial trade and investment.

He will later visit Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to hold talks with the leadership of the African Union Commission.

Part of his goal will also be to meet with US Embassy personnel in various countries and participate in events related to activities supported by the US.

The tour, which is a follow up on the African Ministerial discussion held in Washington DC in 2017, will end on March 13.
