CS Rotich Disputes Reports of Kenya Being Broke

Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich has come out to deny reports that the government is broke.

The CS categorically refuted the allegations which quoted him as having admitted that the government was broke, which he termed as fake.

Addressing journalists on Thursday, the CS maintained that in his statement before the Senate Finance Committee, he meant that Kenya was experiencing a shortfall of revenue to the tune of Sh84 Billion.

CS Rotich dared members of the fourth estate stating: "Tell me of a government that has ever gone broke?”

He added: “The story was just that revenues have fallen behind, it was a sensational story, I have just come out of Eurobond with Sh200 Billion.”

In an effort to calm Kenyans who expressed their worry on social media platforms, the CS affirmed that the government is the safest place to engage in business with.

The Treasury boss noted that the government is forced to borrow in situations where revenues in the country take a dip.

The confusion started after the minister was pinned by lawmakers to explain why there were delays in payment of funds to the county governments.

We are running short of revenue. There was a slow down in business activities because of elections but we are now catching up,” Rotich told Senators.

However, Rotich told the lawmakers that Treasury had already disbursed Sh134 Billion to counties, an amount he stated represented 43 percent of the money meant to be disbursed.
