The Crucial Roles Mama Ngina, Ida Odinga Played in Uhuru-Raila Talks

President Uhuru Kenyatta is alleged to have succumbed to pressure from his mother Mama Ngina Kenyatta and reached out to National Super Alliance (NASA) leader Raila Odinga.

According to the Sunday Standard, sources revealed that the President's mother and younger brother Muhoho were keen on the legacy President Kenyatta would leave behind.

The sources disclosed that Uhuru’s legacy was important to his family and to them, this could only be achieved with a united country.

Reports by the source further revealed that the Kenyatta family had sent emissaries to the NASA leader's home.

Raila’s wife, Ida Odinga, was also noted to have played a crucial role in the talks, with reports indicating that she had been reluctant to have the NASA leader sworn in as ‘People’s President’ on January 30.

The talks between the two are alleged to have begun about three weeks ago when the President called Odinga.

President Kenyatta appointed Ambassador Martin Kimani who heads the National Counter Terrorism Centre to make adjustments to the modalities of the agreement, with Odinga’s ally and lawyer Paul Mwangi representing the other side.

According to the source, some Jubilee insiders had been pushing for the President to approach Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, but the President chose to talk to Raila.

In a statement, Raila's adviser Salim Lone disclosed that the former Prime Minister had opted for negotiation with the government to right the wrongs and protect the people from the horrors that the drawn-out, looming conflict posed.

"Finding an immediate solution to injustices when a country has such deep-rooted ills and entrenched interests is not always possible," Lone stated.
