IEBC Accused of Campaigning for Edith Nyenze

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has been accused by candidates for the Kitui West Parliamentary seat of supporting Wiper candidate Edith Nyenze in the upcoming by-election.

Mutiso Leli and Elijah Kilonzi, who are also vying for the seat claimed that IEBC officials, led by the constituency boss, and security personnel were campaigning for Edith Nyenze.

Reports by the duo alleged that the officials’ actions had tilted the contest in favour of the wife of the late Kitui West MP Francis Nyenze.

“I have already filed a protest with the Kitui West election coordinator. We want a level playing ground," Kilonzi stated.

However, Nyenze's widow maintained that she had strictly followed the campaign schedule that she had presented to the electoral agency.

“All these allegations are unfounded and baseless. They are from people who are crying wolf because they have realised I will beat them on election day," Edith stated.

"Let them prepare for defeat because it has become clear that I am more popular than they are," she added.

Nyenze alleged that her popularity was clear at social gatherings where residents have cheered upon her arrival, adding that her party leader and NASA principal Kalonzo Musyoka has been campaigning with her.

She further dismissed that claims that the electoral agency and security officers were backing her to ensure she clinches the Kitui West MP seat.

A by-election is scheduled to take place on March 26 following the death of legislator Francis Nyenze on December 6, 2017.
