Interior Ministry Explains Why CS Fred Matiang'i Has Been Silent

The Interior Ministry on Tuesday responded to a report appearing on two local newspapers questioning the whereabouts of CS Fred Matiang'i.

Through his Twitter account, Head of Communications at the Ministry Mwenda Njoka responded to the questions clarifying that the CS was out of the country on official government business.

"To the editor of Standard Newspaper’s Palaver: Please do your homework before rushing to publish Sir. Interior CS Dr. Matiang’i has not “run of out steam” nor is he “missing in action.” He has been on an official tour of US and just got back home yesterday," he explained.

He further stated that Matiang'i was scheduled to take part in official functions in the country.

"CS Matiang’i arrived in the country yesterday evening and today has two official functions. One in Murang’a and another in Kiambu despite the long and tiring journey from Washington DC," he added.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Palaver section of the Standard, questioned why Dr Matiang'i had been silent noting how vocal he (Matiang'i) was when he took over the Ministry.

"Wait a minute, where is Interior CS Fred Matiang’i? He started off breathing fire and brimstone, threats and all. Some of us studied him, gave him that ‘we-know-people-like-you look’ and warned him, “Ndugu, easy does it. You will run out of steam”.

"Look at him now! Meanwhile, does he still, eh, or is he spending more time in church? Asking for a friend," Palaver stated.

Similarly, a piece published on The Star wondered whether the recent handshake between President Uhuru Kenyatta and NASA leader Raila Odinga had influenced Matiang'i.

"Since he took over the Interior ministry in January, he has uncharacteristically gone slow, almost as if he misses demonstrations to crackdown on. Or perhaps it is the behind-the-scenes moves that led to the Harambee House handshake that have slowed down the minister.

"Well, it could be that the abrasive man is just taking time to learn the ropes in the ministry that deals with the security agencies," read part of the article.

On Tuesday, CS Matiang'i through his twitter account stated: "Planting a tree after the groundbreaking for construction of a residential block for police officers at Githumu Police Station (Murang’a County) in my first official duty upon arrival from an official tour of USA."
