Justice George Odunga Overturns KNEC's Decision to Cancel 2017 KCSE Results

The High Court on Wednesday gave a ruling that spared 190 students from Chebuyusi High School from sitting for the 2018 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE).

Justice George Odunga validated the 2017 KCSE results for the said students following a suit filed by their parents.

The parent moved to court challenging a decision by the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) which gave all the students "Y" grades, a penalty for exam irregularities.

The parents managed to prove in court that KNEC did not have substantial proof that the boys had been involved in exam malpractice.

Justice Odunga faulted the examinations council for a breach of the law and ordered the team to conduct proper investigations within 14 days.

"We were ready to take the students back and have them take the exam again but the parents were firm in taking the matter to court.

"The school was not involved in the case but we are happy with the outcome, the boys are now free to move on with their lives," Principal Bonface Okoth told Kenyans.co.ke.

Mr Okoth went on to explain that the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCP) had been enjoined in the case, therefore, the students were set for placement in various universities.

"I have also met with the Chairman of the Board, as well as the Parents - Teachers Association chairman and the teams will come up with the way forward," Mr Okoth explained.

The high school emerged as the top school in Kakamega County with a mean score of 8.911 in the 2017 exam, second in the Western region and 16th nationally.
