Death of Alliance High School Student Investigated by Ministry of Education

The Ministry of Education has launched a probe into the death of a student at Alliance High School on Good Friday.

Kiambu County Education Director Ali Abdikadir stated that a special team has been formed to investigate the matter and will visit the school.

Haroun Kipngeno Kemboi was taken to a local hospital last week on Monday following health complications.

According to his family, the deceased died of Tuberculosis but tests were done two days after he was admitted.

"We were told that the student was admitted in a local hospital in Kikuyu on Monday, and tests were done on Wednesday.

"However, on Friday they informed [us] that he was unwell only to call again in 15 minutes that he is dead," the family revealed.

Abdikadir declined to disclose the findings of the school's report on the matter, insisting they would conduct independent investigations.

"We have their report and we will also have to do our own investigations," he was quoted by the Nation.

Last year, the school was also on the spot following reports of bullying of Form One students.

Extracts of the testimonies contained in the report reveal how the victims were forced to lie on graves, crawl on wet grass, and hug light bulbs as part of an initiation rite.

Others claimed they were threatened with machetes. The students narrated how “house committees” and prefects took them through traumatising rituals in what they called “induction” or “action” nights.
