University student leaders have a long history of a strained relationship with police officers.
The quelling of mass action at local universities by killing the leaders equally has a long history, dating back to the 1970s.
Recently when Meru University student leader Evans Njoroge was shot dead by police, he joined a list of student leaders who have died in controversial circumstances.
Despite the outrage over the killings in February, no action has been taken, although the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) called for the officer claimed to have shot the student to be brought to book.

Other than Njoroge, who was shot dead in Meru during a student protest against the Vice-Chancellor, the following were also victims of their positions.
Tito Adungosi
He was the first chairman of SONU, who was jailed for sedition following the failed coup of August, 1982. A day before his released, he died in prison under mysterious circumstances.
It was claimed that he might have been poisoned.
Paul Oulu
He was shot dead on State House Road together with human rights activist Oscar Kingara by people believed to be policemen.
He was referred to as a brilliant, forward-thinking and passionate- a rebel who has the social muscle for his cause, making him a threat to the university administration.

Wafula Buke
He was the shortest serving SONU chairman, just nine days after he won the election in 1987, he was arrested and detained for five years on charges of spying for Libya marking an end to his formal education.
He has since dedicated his life to being a perennial thorn in the side of the government and is currently the ODM Director of Strategy.
