5 Other Roads That Will Have PSV Express Lanes in Nairobi

Following the introduction of an express lane for PSVs using the Thika Super Highway, the Ministry of Transport has announced that similar changes will be made on five other major roads.

The roads include; Lang’ata, Mombasa, Jogoo, Juja, and Waiyaki Way.

According to Urban Planning Principal Secretary Charles Mwaura, the development was part of a larger project that will see some roads expanded to ensure that there are enough lanes to be shared between the PSVs and private vehicles.

“Some of them will first have to undergo some expansion as the lanes cannot be marked as they are now,” added Mwaura, who had accompanied the Transport CS James Macharia when they appeared before the Senate Committee on Roads.

KENHA, however, did not disclose when the second phase of the project will be rolled out

He further added that the introduction of National Youth Service (NYS) buses was part of the programme as the Government pilots the introduction of the Bus Rapid Transport System (BRT).

Reports by KeNHA and the Transport Ministry indicate that the BRT buses will have pick-up terminus at Githurai, Kasarani, Roysambu and Outer Ring.

Passengers will be dropped off at Tom Mboya (Posta), GPO, Community, Kyulu Road, Mara Road, Hospital Road and Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH).

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, KENHA confirmed that the project would be carried out in coordination with the Nairobi Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (NAMATA).

CS Macharia disclosed that the Thika highway corridor was given priority since the 900 buses which are needed to serve the six BRT corridors identified by the government are not currently available.

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko on Thursday revealed that his government is currently constructing Ngara Road terminus which is among the newly gazetted PSV terminus aimed at decongesting the city.
