Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu and MP Gideon Mulyungi's Followers Clash Leaving Scores Injured

Scores were hurt in Mwingi town, Kitui County after followers of Governor Charity Ngilu and Mwingi Central Member of Parliament (MP) Gideon Mulyungi clashed on Tuesday evening.

The latest incident marks an escalation of an already frosty relationship between the two politicians from Kitui.

Mulyungi had on Saturday warned Ngilu after the latter held an event at his constituency without informing him.

The said event was scheduled to take place at Musila Gardens where the county boss was set to launch training for boda-boda riders.

However, a looming battle for supremacy saw youth allied to the MP heckle Ngilu and the leaders accompanying her which saw the police call in to calm the rowdy crowd with the event being called off.

Reports indicate that the youth accused the leaders of being "Jubilee-Party Moles" and President Uhuru Kenyatta's chief agents in the last election.

"As the governor of this county, I can visit any part of Kitui County without seeking permission from anyone.

"Those who think they can threaten me should know that I’ve been in this game for too long," Ngilu stated.

Other media reports indicate that Mulyungi might be planning to unseat the governor in the 2022 polls.

In February, the MP had defended the governor after her move to ban charcoal burning, transportation and sand harvesting in the county.
