Moses Kuria's Advice to Chebukati After Resignation of 3 Commissioners

Gatundu South Member of Parliament Moses Kuria has hit out at troubled IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati asking him to also resign and pave way for a new commission.

This follows the resignation of Consolata Maina, Margaret Mwachanya, and Paul Kurgat from the poll body.

"I have read Wafula Chebukati's long and winding statement with dismay. Its long on verbosity but a lilliput in substance.

"Wafula Chebukati is the most dithering and flip-flopping Chairman that our electoral management body has ever had. His indecisiveness almost plunged Kenya into constitutional turmoil.

"I call upon Chebukati and all the remaining commissioners to do the honourable thing and resign to pave way for us in parliament to embark on a process of establishing a new commission," wrote the legislator on his facebook page.

His sentiments were echoed by Siaya Senator James Orengo who termed the commission "cursed."

The Senate Minority leader noted that the resignations were as a result of an incurable and cancerous disease that bedevils the commission.

Chebukati had on Monday vowed not to resign, instead, asking for a speedy process of replacing the three.

“The commission assures the public that its operations are on course and we remain focused on delivering our constitutional mandate.

"As the chairman, I am committed to the course of transforming the country’s electoral management body to make it more responsive and professional,” he noted in a 3-page statement issued on Monday night.

The Chairman stated that the commissioners could have called for a review of the plenary decision to suspend CEO Ezra Chiloba instead of resigning.

“Their action demonstrates lack of capacity to lead in difficult times and accommodate divergent views,” the statement read in part.
