Rugby Players Frank Wanyama and Alex Olaba Charged With Gang Rape

Two rugby players Frank Wanyama and Alex Olaba on Monday denied gang-raping a female singer and were released on a cash bail of Ksh500,000 each.

According to the charge sheet, the two were accused of committing the act in Highrise, Nairobi on February 11, 2018.

However, Wanyama and Olaba pleaded not guilty before Nairobi Chief Magistrate Francis Andayi and the hearing of the case was set for May 16, 2018.

The two Kenya Harlequin FC players were arrested last week after the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji stated there was sufficient evidence for their prosecution.

They had been questioned by police and denied the claim maintaining they had consensual sex with their accuser.

Under the DPP's watch, six witnesses recorded statements and further examination in the hospital established that the complaint is pregnant.

Besides examining the suspects and the complainant for DNA, detectives wrote to the chief executive officer of Nairobi South hospital requesting a medical report.

In their statement, the players stated they knew their accuser and that they were together on the day she alleged to have been raped.

After the file was taken to the DPP for review, he returned a culpable verdict and ordered their prosecution with gang rape.
