Police Officer Directing Traffic on Flooded Mombasa Road Catches Boinnet's Eye

The Inspector General (IG) of Police Joseph Kipchirchir Boinnet has been moved by a photo of a traffic police officer pictured guiding traffic along a flooded section of Mombasa Road near Sultan Hamud.

A motorist had taken the picture of the officer standing in almost ankle-deep waters to signal the motorists the edge of the submerged road.

This selfless act saw netizens take to social media asking for the recognition of the officer whose acts had gone beyond the call of duty.

The National Police Service took to twitter indicating that the IG "commends Police Constable Abdi Galgalo of Sultan Hamud Police Station captured by a motorist while directing traffic on a flooded section of the Nairobi/Mombasa highway."

"His action exemplifies the selfless service rendered by many officers to Kenyans each day," the statement read.

The traffic officer in the middle of floods was described by Kenyans as dedicated and human for his rare act in a disciplined service often in the headlines for the wrong reasons.

Following the IG Boinnet's statement, social media users continued pressing for a worthy recognition for the officer.

Some of the suggestions included having him promoted to a higher rank within the police service.

One user reminded the rest of the police force of the need to emulate the officer: "If only the rest of you worked like Abdi Galgalo, even the lawbreakers would get born again. I hope he is not only commended but appreciated and rewarded with another rank."

Another one expressed a contrary opinion indicating that the officer was simply doing his work: "We are so used to corruption that we find it funny when somebody is doing what he's paid to do."
