The Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) has urged motorists to observe all road signs as the country heads to the festive season, especially on roads that are being constructed.
In a statement on Sunday, November 9, KURA Director General Silas Kinoti said that motorists who are caught contravening these signs shall be apprehended by security officers, and legal action shall be taken against them.
Additionally, Kinoti said that engineers from the authority will launch a crackdown on contractors who fail to install road signage at road construction sites.
"Drivers observe all road signs as we head into the festive season. As the authority building these roads, I expect full discipline on site. Contractors must install all required signage — No excuses. Our Engineers will enforce compliance," Kinoti said.
"Failure to follow road signs is a violation of the law and may lead to apprehend by traffic officers. Safety is our shared responsibility. We are delivering the roads Kenya deserves," he added.
The festive season, which historically involves increased activities and social gatherings, contributes to increased travel and incidents, as well as unlawful activities.
Speaking on Friday, November 8, Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja assured that security agencies are already engineering strategies to guarantee safety during the December holidays.
According to Kanja, he will conduct regular consultations with regional commanders and Intelligence units across the country to ensure that police are aware of emerging threats during the festive season.
“We must, from time to time, come together to discuss and strategise because we must at all times remain a step ahead of offenders,” Kanja said.
“We are hopeful that even as the festive season draws closer, all Kenyans will have enough security,” he added.
Additionally, the police boss stressed the need for the police to work professionally and respect the rights and dignity of Kenyans as they conduct their duties during this period.
“When we all work together, we have intelligence-led operations, meaning everyone is contributing. We bring together all officers and agencies to ensure unity of purpose, and when we do that, we all succeed,” Kanja said.
