Bond Terms Reduced for 2 Rugby Players Charged With Rape

Bond terms for two national rugby team players charged with gang rape were reduced by a Nairobi court on Wednesday.

On Monday, Frank Wanyama and Alex Olaba denied raping a female artist and were released on a Sh1 Million bond and Sh500,000 cash bail.

Their lawyer Wafula Simiyu, however, applied for a review of the decision stating that his clients were jobless university students and could not raise the funds.

“We pray for a lenient bond term. The accused are unable to raise what had earlier been granted to them,” he pleaded.

The court subsequently ruled that the players each be freed on a Sh500,000 bond with surety or a Sh100,000 cash bail.

Simiyu told the court that his clients were dependent on appearance allowances for their day to day needs.

After singer Wendy Kemunto went public with allegations that the 2 players raped her on her birthday on February 11, the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) announced that they would look into the matter.

The players maintained that they had consensual sex with Kemunto in Nairobi's Highrise estate.

They were arrested last week after Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji stated there was sufficient evidence for their prosecution.

Nairobi Chief Magistrate Francis Andayi set the hearing of the case for May 16, 2018.
