Joho Asked to Fulfil This Condition Before Vying For Presidency

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has stated that it will not stand in the way of any of its leaders who wish to vie for the presidency in 2022 but they have to meet one requirement.

The party's chairman John Mbadi made it clear that leaders who showed interest in vying will have to seek approval of members during a delegates conference as the party is seeking to strengthen its democracy.

''As a party, we believe in one another including involving party members in the decision making and deliberation within the party structure.

''We derive our authority from the people. Traditionally, it’s the people who elect party flag bearer. Those with interests cleared at party level will seek their nod,'' he stated.

This comes after some members of ODM's top leadership openly declared their interest in vying for the presidency in 2022.

Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho last week revealed that despite the Uhuru-Raila handshake, his presidential bid is still intact.

"Handshake or no handshake, I will still vie for the presidency in 2022," he exclaimed.

Last month, Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya asked NASA leader Raila Odinga to back him to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta.

The governor noted that his intentions to run for the presidency were no longer a secret.

"Mimi tayari nimeanza safari na sitaki iwe siri. Naenda kutafuta kura ya urais huko Nairobi. (I have already embarked on the journey and it should not be a secret anymore. I am going to run for the presidency,)" he stated.
