The Attorney General's salary has been reduced by more than 50 percent following the exit of Githu Muigai who resigned in February.
New AG Paul Kihara Kariuki will earn significantly less than his predecessor who was the best paid public servant with a monthly salary of Sh2.7 million.
Treasury documents indicate that Kihara's monthly remuneration will stand at about Sh1.24 million.
Muigai benefitted from a Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) declaration that state officers whose pay had been set before the commission was established continue receiving the wages.
When Muigai was in office, SRC pegged the AG's salary at between Sh792,000 and Sh1,056,000.

The former AG also benefitted from the fact that he came from private legal practice and the lecture room, qualifying him for a non-practising allowance as happens in the case of lawyers entering the judicial service.
Starting from July, the AG will be entitled to Sh14.9 million a year, down from Sh32.9 million.
The new figures represent a massive 54 percent reduction, but it is worth noting that treasury documents represent estimates and may differ from the actual amount.
When he was sworn in in March, Kihara promised that he would focus on easing access to justice.
“I will look at what bedevils the justice system. Laws are not adequately being enforced,” he stated.
