Vihiga Senator George Khaniri Threatens 2022 Election Boycott

Vihiga Senator George Khaniri has vowed to rally Kenyans to boycott the 2022 Presidential election unless electoral reforms are implemented before then.

Khaniri maintained that he would not vote at all in the absence of reforms, explaining that rightful winners were constantly shortchanged.

“I will not vote in 2022 if reforms are not implemented. I call on my people not to vote too if the reforms that will ensure justice in elections are not done,” he asserted.

Khaniri claimed that National Super Alliance (NASA) leader Raila Odinga won the Presidential election in 2007, 2013 and 2017.

Khaniri, who reportedly plans to run for Governor at the next polls, stated that this was the right time to effect changes that would ensure the next election was credible.

Commenting on speculation that Odinga was planning another stab at the Presidency, he asserted that the opposition chief would not take part in any election unless reforms had been implemented.

He endorsed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Raila and President Uhuru Kenyatta while speaking at Muele in Sabatia, Vihiga County.

At a separate event, nominated Member of Parliament (MP) Godfrey Osotsi echoed the need for electoral reforms to ensure the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) was "truly independent".

“Recommendations by the Kriggler Commission were not implemented. We need to go back to the recommendations,” he stated.

Both leaders asked Amani National Congress (ANC) leader Musalia Mudavadi to throw his weight behind the unity agenda fronted by Raila and President Kenyatta.
