John Matiang'i Turns Down Appointment to SRC

Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Fred Matiang'i's brother on Tuesday turned down a lucrative government position to become a commissioner of the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC).

John Matiang'i is currently the National Treasurer for the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT).

According to reports, he declined to accept the nomination since the position would have required him to work full time.

He had been nominated by the Central Organisation of Trade Unionists (COTU) to represent trade unionists at the SRC.

This comes at a time when the KNUT Secretary General Wilson Sossion has been battling to retain his position in the union despite having been nominated by the ODM party to Parliament.

On Monday morning, Mr Sossion was barred from entering his offices at the KNUT headquarters by security men guarding the premises.

The nominated MP had shown up with a court order barring his removal from office and terming his forceful suspension from the union as unlawful.

"They have restrained me from accessing my office, to facilitate an illegal installation of a replacement, and blocked me from performing my duties to the teachers of this country, contrary to the directive of the Employment and Labour Relations Court,” Sossion noted.

According to the court order, a temporary injunction order had been issued by the court on May 2, 2018, prohibiting his deregistration as an official of KNUT and/or installing another official to the post, pending the hearing and determination of the petition filed.

"The application had been fixed for inter partes hearing on May 10, 2018, and therefore this other faction’s occupation of the office is illegal and in contempt of the court order,” exclaimed Mr Sossion.
