According to the charge sheet, the Member of Parliament is accused of robbery and destroying a building belonging to a businessman.

The charge sheet further indicated that the suspect, together with others who failed to appear before the court, wilfully and unlawfully destroyed a property belonging to Riziq Fundi Bakari worth Ksh1 million.

Sawa was accused of stealing a freezer, refrigerator, 35 plastic chairs, counter table, 20 cooking oil jerricans, 20 bundles of wheat flour, computer, television set, welding toolbox, a phone and a locker, valued at Ksh850, 000.

The lawmaker did not take the plea as the chief magistrate assigned the case, Julius Nang'ea, was absent but he appeared before Mombasa Senior Principal Magistrate Francis Kyambia.

He was accused of having committed the offence at Bamburi on October 17, 2009.

Notably, the Matuga legislator is alleged to have leased the plot to Bakari in 2006 who operated the restaurant that was ransacked and destroyed by the suspect.

Meanwhile, former Laikipia North legislator Mathew Lempurkel on Thursday was acquitted by a Nanyuki court for two counts of incitement to violence and for allegedly harming a police officer two years ago.

Chief Magistrate Lucy Mutai noted that the evidence presented in court had inconsistencies, material contradictions and exaggerations which remained unexplained.
