Kiambu Woman Rep Gathoni Wa Muchomba Declares Devolved Health Care a Mistake

Kiambu Woman Representative Gathoni Wa Muchomba declared the devolved health care system as Kenya's biggest mistake.

Speaking while attending the second post-mortem exam of one Rose Waithera Kanyingi's body, the woman rep declared that the decision was made prematurely.

"The biggest mistake we did was devolving the very sensitive health sector. Counties were not ready for it," she stated.

The family of the deceased woman demanded a second autopsy following her death at the Thika Level Five Hospital.

Rose had been referred from the Gatundu Level Five Hospital where she had developed complications during a Caesarean delivery.

The family rejected an initial autopsy report that estimated that the woman passed on due t excessive bleeding brought about by ulcers.

"We are sure there was a clear case of professional negligence and have engaged a private pathologist for a second opinion," claimed Rose's brother, Mwangi Kanyingi.

He alleged that the doctors failed to attend to her sister immediately she complained of a swollen stomach soon after her delivery on April 19.

According to the brother, she was only referred to Thika Level Five on April 26 after her condition grew worse.

"I paid Sh4,000 for the ambulance to Thika Level 5 Hospital. When we reached there and even before she could be operated on, she started vomiting blood," he narrated.

Mwangi further narrated that doctors at the Thika hospital told the family that Rose's intestines had been ruptured during the Caesarean section resulting in the complications.

"Our sister has never been sick before, not even during her pregnancy. We are therefore shocked to hear that she died of ulcers," he stated.
