Kiambu Woman Rep Gathoni Wamuchomba is Advocating for Polygamous Marriages

Kiambu Woman Rep Gathoni Wamuchomba asked able men to consider marrying several wives.

Wamuchomba noted that raising children, in the absence of fathers led to serious social problems among the youth today.

She argued that men who sire children outside wedlock should consider taking their mothers as additional wives remarking that it was not a crime but part of the African culture.

Wamuchomba maintained most of the youth indulging in alcohol and those who become street children, are likely in these situations due to lack of a good upbringing.

“We give birth to these children, and we do not want to own up to them," the Kiambu Women Rep stated.

"If you are a man from the Kikuyu community, and you can sustain five wives, have them and if you are a man and you are in a position to bring up many children do it,” she added.

She spoke at Violence Recovery Centre in Karura, Kiambaa sub-county, where she launched a programme to rehabilitate alcoholic addicts.

Wamochomba noted that most of the young people who showed up in the programme only spoke of their mothers, an indication that their fathers abandoned them.

“We need to be honest, these children who are raised by single mothers, where are their fathers?" she asked.

"Why do we want to pretend that this is not a problem? As much as we are talking about the church and our culture, we need to go back to the drawing board to discuss this issue and come up with a solution,” she added.
