Nairobi's Most Wanted Criminal Shimoli Jr Shot Dead

Nairobi's most wanted criminal Shimoli Jr on Friday was shot dead by Kenya Police in Jericho.

Though details of the incident remain scanty, reports indicate he was felled after being trailed.

The deceased is said to be a son to Edward Maina Shimoli, another criminal who was also shot dead by police in 2007 along Kangundo road.

His father, who was also on the list of Kenyan's most wanted criminals, was nicknamed the Jackal because of his long success in eluding police even when he is arrested and jailed.

Mr Shimoli, at the time of his murder, had confessed to 14 murders, 88 rapes plus a string of bank robberies and drug deals in a decade-long crime plot.

He was also a serial jailbreaker, escaping from prison four times, including staging an escape from the country's maximum security prison moments before he was to be hanged.

In his confessions, he informed the police that he had been able to escape from the cells by bribing and tricking warders.

Shimoli was famed for getting away after engaging dozens of policemen in a fierce gun battle at Uhuru Park, Nairobi.

He was also acknowledged for being the first Kenyan gangster to incorporate 'affirmative action into crime' since he was able to bring women into his gangs and schemes.

Prior to Shimoli's escape, the most wanted men in Kenya were Bernard "Rasta" Matheri, Gerald Munyeria Wambugu and Antony Ngugi Kanagi who were accused of a number of murders, car hijackings and violent robberies in the 90s.

After the police put a bounty on their heads, they were told in and finally shot dead by the police by 1997.
