Kenyans Angered After Bhang Peddler is Jailed for Life

Kenyans have jumped to the defense of one Emmanuel Chacha who was on Wednesday jailed for life after pleading guilty to trafficking 155 rolls of bhang worth Ksh 23,250.

This ruling did not go down well with netizens who claimed that top government officials who have stolen millions are rarely jailed yet Chacha had been handed such a tough sentence.

"And therein lies the problem with the Kenyan criminal justice system... NYS officials loot Ksh 9 billion = no jail time. Petty non-violent crime 20k = life sentence," wrote Ibrahim Jabri.

His sentiments were echoed by another netizen who asked for the same penalty to be met out on NYS 'bandits.'

Here are some of the comments:

Meanwhile those who stole 282 million get 3 years...that's the Justice system for you in Kenya. Thou shall not commit a felony if you are poor...

Jailed for life? While there are people walking free having stolen 10 billion! What is Sh23,250 compared to 10 billion!!!!

Maybe the cases of grand corruption/theft should be heard in this Mombasa court. Maybe, just maybe we could see thieves executed or discarded into the sea?

Ex-Nairobi Town Clerk John Gakuo and former Permanent Secretary Sammy Kirui were on Tuesday sentenced to three years in jail for their involvement in a land scam.

The two were also fined Ksh1 Million for their role in the Ksh283 Million cemetery saga.

Their co-accused Mary Ngethe, a former city council Legal Secretary, and Alexander Musee were also found guilty of knowingly giving false information about the same and will each serve three years in prison too.
