New Battle Miguna Miguna's Nomination as Nairobi Deputy Governor Has Started

The nomination of controversial lawyer and politician Miguna Miguna to take over as Nairobi Deputy Governor has sparked a lot of criticism from leaders and a majority of newsmakers.

Miguna was on Wednesday night nominated by Nairobi County boss to deputise him after an earlier directive to Governor Sonko to pick his second in command.

This has further sparked an online exchange between those opposing the move and those supporting it.

During an interview on Wednesday morning, Nairobi County Speaker Beatrice Elachi maintained that although Sonko had nominated Miguna, he may not be vetted as a Deputy Governor candidate until the government clarifies his citizenship status.

Elachi maintained that Miguna's nomination was political but he must be subjected to the normal vetting process at the county assembly, adding that the controversial city lawyer should not "hurry to jump on a plane back to Nairobi" following the nomination.

Adding his voice to the matter, Senator Johnson Sakaja opposed Miguna's nomination as the county's deputy governor stating: "Miguna will not become the Deputy Governor of Nairobi. Take that to the bank."

Like the rest of Nairobians, former Kiambu Governor William Kabogo stated he was surprised by Sonko's decision since they have been friends for a long time and he thought he could always predict him.

Kabogo remarked: "I’m completely confused. I know Sonko very well and could always predict him having been my friend since Sept. 2010 This one I didn't see coming. Mike what’re you up to? Can I help?"

On his part, renowned lawyer Ahmednasir Abdullahi stated: "Imagine living in Nairobi with a population of 5 million Kenyans and you have Sonko as Governor and Miguna as Deputy Governor...some jokes are not just in bad taste but are cruel too."

On the other hand, city lawyer Donald Kipkor welcomed Miguna's nomination remarking: "In the Union between Gov. Mike Sonko & Deputy Governor Miguna Miguna, some see a Faustian Bargain that will end in a Greek Tragedy; am optimistic and see a Union Of Zeus & Alcmene that led to victory in the Heracles ... Nairobi is entering uncharted waters & shore is yonder."

Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo Jr added his voice on the same stating: "The Speaker of the County of Nairobi should not second guess the rulings of the Courts. What clarification does the speaker require and from who is is the clarification sought?"

Miguna's lawyer Cliff Ombetta, who received the lawyer's nomination letter, stated that his client had welcomed the appointment and the government should issue him with his passport.

"I have the letter. I am on my way to hand over the letter to the speaker. Miguna is considering that position. Miguna should be allowed back into the country to take up that position once he is vetted and goes through," Ombetta stated.
