How Gangs at Nairobi Car Parks Are Terrorising Motorists

Gangs of youth have reportedly taken over some streets and parking lots which they in turn lease to anyone who wants to park their cars.

Investigations indicate that motorists in the city are coerced to pay extra charges on top of the parking fees to youth who supposedly take care of their cars after officials working hours.

The gangs fleece money from motorists in the early hours of the morning before the attendants get to work and in the evening after they leave.

Motorists have to part with cash ranging from Ksh20 to Ksh200 depending on what time it is and how much space is available.

A defaulter of these charges is met with hostility from the gangs whereby their cars are either vandalized or the tires flattened.

Failure to comply can also lead to the youth being rowdy towards the motorist.

If you have already paid the parking fees, the gangs ask for a little amount of cash to show one where to park and protect the cars from petty thieves.

They also help car owners park or reverse their cars out of parking spaces.

Most motorists are not bothered by this trend as hostility towards it leads to them incurring more charges due to vandalism.

Contacted by Kenyans.co.ke, about the issue, the County communications department promise to forward the issue to the relevant authorities.
