IEBC Vehicle Kills 9-year-old Pupil in Makueni

A Standard Two pupil died on the spot after she was hit by a speeding vehicle belonging to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) along Kamunyii River on the Machakos-Wote road.

The 9-year-old was on her way home from school when the driver of the speeding car hit the brakes.

A boda boda rider who witnessed the accident, Vincent Maingi, stated: "I saw the vehicle skid before it veered off the road then stopped about 20 meters from where the child fell."

Other children who were walking with the pupil quickly ran to safety. 

Police officers based in Makueni joined their traffic counterparts at the seen of the accident.

The child's body was taken to Makueni Level 4 Hospital while the vehicle was towed to Makueni Police Station.

Makueni OCPD Bosita Omukolongolo confirmed that the driver recorded a statement.

He further dismissed allegations from some quarters that the driver was drunk, asserting that investigations should be allowed to run their course.

"The driver is with us to record statement. Whether he was drunk or not is an issue subject to investigation and confirmation by medics," Omukolongolo stated.

Commenting on the incident, IEBC Communications Director confirmed having the information but was yet to receive full updates on the matter.

"We got reports of an accident involving our vehicle but we are yet to get details of the incident from the traffic authorities," he stated.

The child had been released to go home early as others from her school attended a sports event at the nearby Unoa grounds in Wote town.

Her grandfather, Kalota Kasimu, disclosed that the girl was an orphan.
