Somalia President Mohamed Abdullahi Makes a Surprise Visit to Kenya

Somalia President Mohamed Abdullahi on Wednesday landed in Nairobi on a surprise work-visit.

According to his communication team, the Head of State is set to hold bilateral talks and further discussions on cooperation on key security, trade and diplomatic ties.

President Abdullahi is noted to have been received by Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Monica Juma and her ICT counterpart Joe Mucheru at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, then later escorted to State House.

The unexpected visit by the President is claimed to have caught even senior Foreign Affairs officials unaware.

His coming to the country follows a directive by the Directorate of Criminal Investigation that warned that the number of al Shabaab militants along the border with Somalia is on the rise as others are trying to cross the country.

In a press release by the police, they divulged that the militants led by operational commander Ibrahim Mohammed, alias Sharif Layn Kulul, may be planning attacks in Kenya.

Additionally, the National Intelligence Service (NIS) had also cautioned that the militants could be planning attacks in the coastal areas especially Mombasa following the ongoing Ramathan month.

This is also after the Kenyan government warned that the activities of foreign powers seeking to undermine the government in Mogadishu are a threat to regional security.

In his State of the Nation Address, the President Uhuru warned against interference in Somalia.

He affirmed: "The region is not at peace. Somalia remains troubled, largely by foreign agents who weaken its government, who divide its peoples, and who threaten to reverse the gains we have so painfully won under Amisom."

"If Somalia remains unsettled, let us admit that South Sudan nation remains in crisis," he added.
